Welcome February! Welcome Black History Month!
Welcome February! Welcome Black History Month. Black History is American History and as such should be studied and understood by all students. The contributions of blacks to every fiber of our society should be explored and celebrated.
Below is a poem I wrote for Jacob Lawrence; it appeared in the New York Reader published by Sleeping Bear Press in 2008.
HARLEM TUNE
Movin' north
through flood and heat,
movin' north
to find my beat.
Rumble, dazzle,
scat 'n slide,
Now Harlem is my home.
🎷
Colors bold 'n colors bright,
Trumpets callin' out all night.
I'm so glad to be alive—
now Harlem is my home.
Rumble, dazzle,
scat 'n slide.
I'm so glad to be alive—
'cause Harlem is my home!
