CELEBRATE THE PEOPLE

 The air is heavy with fear and grief. How can we celebrate what we’ve not achieved?

 

celebrate the people who make this country great
who honor the ideals of our birth—
who honor we the people
whom the government should serve
and not the gods and demigods
who mark themselves above the law.

celebrate the workers who labored in the field,
who were forced to build our bridges and our tunnels,
workers we should recognize and honor.

celebrate the mothers carrying babies in their arms,
and the young children clinging to their skirts,
the fathers who traveled with valiant hope and promise.

celebrate a history marked with blood and longing
defending the ideals we have yet to reach.
celebrate the broken-hearted who keep marching.

celebrate the presidents who would not be kings but leaders
who cared about the people whom they served.
Lift the ravaged flag and celebrate

the people who make this country great.
